If You See Kay by Kay Cardwell

If you are in Northern California and have a run, a short anecdote, won a motorcycle, or what have you, you can see it in If You See Kay. You can e-mail me at kaycardwell@aol.com, snail mail me at Kay Cardwell c/o Thunder Press, 3300 Fernbrook Lane N Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN 55447, or call 707.678.4261

I know that it is already November, and the riding season is starting to dim, but if you do any Interstate or remote area riding you will want to think about this: I have ridden alone on some pretty secluded roads, and there were times and places where my cell phone had no service. I was lucky that all went well, and no emergencies occurred, but I should have carried a satellite phone. Cellular phones work from towers, but there are many remote and rural areas where there are no towers, and your cell phone is useless. Unlike cell phones, satellite phones do not use towers. Guess what they use? They use Low Earth Orbiting (or LEO) satellites. Your call will get through from the middle of nowhere. The best part is that you don’t have to buy them. You can rent them by the day or by the week. Look up satellite phones on the web to find several different companies. Globalstar is one, and you can reach them at 888.636.0707… Get well wishes for my friend, Bill Downey, in Klamath Falls. Bill has a serious fight ahead of him to beat an advanced cancer… Get well wishes also go to another friend, Pervis Leewright, of Fairfield. Pervis is in ICU in the Contra Costa County Hospital with blood clots in his legs and lungs… Don’t forget to go and ride with the Ukiah H.O.G. chapter on their 19th annual Willits Toy Run. The event will be held November 27—rain or shine. A run will leave the Evergreen Shopping Center from Ray’s Food Place on Highway 101 south of Ukiah at noon. You will go to the Willits Little Lake Grange on School Street and party from 12:30 until 4 p.m. There will be live music by Ray & The Reveleers, food, raffle and a no-host bar. The price of admission is one new unwrapped toy and for more information you can call Rich Venturi at 707.462.1672 or B.B. Kamoroff at 707.459.6372. Don’t forget to make time to go by Harley-Davidson of Ukiah on State Street. It is a very nice shop… After almost five years in Oregon, Kellen Yee has returned to Northern California. His dad, Nick, said Kellen missed his friends and family, and to celebrate his return, dad and son took off for Street Vibrations. Welcome home, Kellen!… Happy Birthday to all you Harley riders who celebrate in November. Happy birthday to IHR members Jay Cuccarese in Salem, Oregon, and to Bob Moore in Boulder Creek. Happy birthday to Sam Martinez in San Jose; to Rusty Barter in Stockton H.O.G.; and to Harley riders in Santa Cruz Debbie Downey, Pete Gallager, Dennis Grazian, Bud Grazian, Lisa Racine-Heekin and Terry Swinggi. Happy birthday to Charles Atwater in either Santa Cruz or Palm Springs depending upon which way the snow is blowing; to Iron Steed riders Chuck Matheson, Sam Fernandez, Joelene Downey and Kathy Lukachinsky. Happy birthday to Kenny Mann and to my dear friend Gene “Taz” Thompson in Hidden Valley Lake. And last, but never ever least, happy birthday to Lompico Lyle, chairman of Monterey Bay Confederation of Clubs and founder of the Ghost Mountain Riders MC… Yes, you can! You can get a birthday wish from me for yourself or a friend. All you have to do is e-mail me with your name, where you live and/or which group you ride with and your birthday month. This is a good time to remind you that my deadline for any issue is the 9th of the month preceding the month of publication. Get your December news to me prior to November 9, and don’t be bashful. I really do want to hear from you… Art Mitchell, owner of Mitchell’s Harley-Davidson in Modesto recently won the Butler Award. The Butler Award is a recognition of a blunder, similar to a Broken Spoke Award. Tony Ball, director of Modesto H.O.G., nominated Art when he discovered that Art was so frustrated with his new iPhone that he wanted to return it. He couldn’t hear his calls and people couldn’t hear him—until a bystander took the protective film off. The iPhone works just fine now. That’s OK, Art. My granddaughter had to show me how to use my new phone…
