The East Coast Tattour Premiers At Laconia

April 25th, 2012 | by: Ken Aiken

For years tattoo artists have set up shop in the cottages overlooking Lake Street at Wiers Beach during Bike Week.  This year the ink will flow at a new location as the Lake Opechee Inn & Conference Center hosts the opening event of the East Coast Tattour.

From Wednesday at 6 PM to Saturday at 10 PM, artists from around the country—and even from Japan—will pick up their guns and lay down their designs in what promises to be the most dynamic tattoo tour in America. Celebrity artist Amy Nicoletto from House of Pain in Rialto, California and a star on LA Ink is attending and Jeff Goyette of Inflicting Ink will be hauling in his famous tattoo truck/studio into Laconia. The official webpage, www.eastcoasttattour2012.com lists 44 noted artists attending, but as of the last week in April about 70 have actually registered according to organizer Jackie Dowd. (more…)

Ride to the Sky

April 21st, 2012 | by: Ken Aiken

During the second week of June riders have the opportunity to ride the most spectacular road in the Northeast. On Monday June 11th and Thursday the 14th the Mt. Washington Auto road becomes a motorcycles-only highway to heaven for the annual Ride to the Sky event—weather permitting.

Everything is “weather permitting” as this mountain has the reputation for having the worst weather in the world and motorcyclists won’t even be allowed to make the 7.6-mile journey if winds are above 40 mph. There are more than a 100 days a year when hurricane-force winds ravage the mountain and in 1934 a wind speed of 231 mph was recorded. Down in the valley it can be 75 degrees while sleeting at the summit – this is from personal experience. It’s this unpredictable weather than makes this one of the top ten deadliest mountains in the world, ranking immediately behind Mt. Everest. Of course, Everest doesn’t get a quarter-of-a-million visitors a year. (more…)

Atlanticade Moves to a new Home – Again.

March 10th, 2012 | by: Ken Aiken

“Divorce is an ugly word, but sometimes a relationship has such irreconcilable differences that here’s no other choice but separation.” I was explaining why Atlanticade had moved from Moncton, New Brunswick to a small resort town on the Maine border (Atlanticade: The rally that never sleeps –finding friendliness in festival’s 4th year ThunderPress, Sept. 2010). When I learned that this rally was moving to Summerside, Prince Edward Island in 2012 I picked up the phone and called its organizer, Dale Hicks, to get the story.                                            (more…)

Old Indian in Las Vegas

January 4th, 2012 | by: Ken Aiken

On January 12, 2012 in Las Vegas, Bonhams will offer a 105-year old Indian motorcycle for auction.  It’s estimated to bring $80,000 and looks like scrap metal destined for the junk pile. Yet, this is something that makes the true collector’s heart race in anticipation: it’s an American classic in original condition. (more…)

Trikes. Is It Motorcycling?

November 28th, 2011 | by: Ken Aiken

Motorcycles have two wheels, not three or four, so why call it motorcycling when you’re riding something that looks like a tricycle—or worse yet, riding a tricycle backwards?  The increasing popularity of trikes, tadpoles, and cycle-cars coupled with an aging population of longtime and newbie riders had me pondering this question so I took it to the road. (more…)
